Amtrak Accessible Stations - St. Albans, Waterbury and Randolph, VT, Port Kent, Ticonderoga, Amsterdam and Whitehall, NY

Oct 15, 2014

Railroad Construction Company, Inc. has completed work on seven contracts for Amtrak upgrading commuter rail stations across Vermont and New York State.  This fourteen month project improved the level of handicapped accessibility at the stations.  All work was performed in compliance with the guidelines established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The logistics of the job needed to be carefully planned since the seven jobsites were almost 300 miles apart.  A strict schedule in regard to project management, manpower, equipment and delivery of materials was required to ensure that the jobs were run as efficiently as possible.

All stations required varying degrees of demolition, construction and renovation.  Existing asphalt platforms and parking lots were demolished.  New platforms - some on piles, some on grade - were built and new platform lighting was added.  New parking lots with handicapped spaces were constructed.  Improved sidewalks, curbing, ramps and handrails were installed.  One new bathroom was built and another  was completely renovated with new plumbing and mechanical systems.  Of course, both contain all required handicapped features.

Special attention was paid to the aesthetics of each site.  Decorative wheelchair lift enclosures were constructed and the extensive plantings were specifically chosen to complement the natural beauty of their surroundings.  The final result is an attractive and practical enhancement to the mass transit system in the Northeast.

We wish to thank Tim Catillaz, Christoph Gerhard, Craig Weed, Gail Secan and Michael Juliana of Amtrak, Perlita Schorfheide, Brian Morris, David Cimino, Tom Cohoon, Dave Mangun, Jim Sgro and John Cartier of Jacobs Engineering and our subcontractors Clear Enterprises, Gomez Electrical Contractors, Solid Earth Technologies, Tri-Valley Plumbing & Heating, SD Landscapes, North Country Air, Ouellette Plumbing, Atlantic Testing Laboratories, the Chazen Companies  and CHA Consulting for their great work on this project.
